COVID 19 PANDEMIC IMPACT ON PROJECT MANAGEMENT - CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS

Summary

In early 2020, the coronavirus pandemic suddenly and very rapidly swept across the globe, affecting all areas of activity and affecting every individual; Changed the lifestyle and work of each of us. Not surprisingly, the pandemic has had a major impact on project managers, project delivery and management styles.

The pandemic has been raging for more than a year and a number of companies and projects in the field of projects have stalled, while a number have been able to survive and develop.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) exposure tested organizations' ability and ability to effectively manage projects and programs.

The studies identified 4 stages (Horizons) of response, namely:

Stage 0 - Reaction. Address immediate challenges and ensure clarity on the role of the project team and stakeholders.

Stage 1 - Sustainability. Restoration of disrupted activities and introduction of a sustainable project implementation model.

Stage 2 - Recovery. Adapting projects to updated business models.

Stage 3 - New Reality. Create strategic options and compass scenarios to ensure long-term growth.

When we return to the new normal, many ways of working are likely to change forever, the approach to project selection and management in organizations will change, and project leaders must adapt to these new rules of operation.

Organizations are undergoing significant changes in this unprecedented era. Amid the global pandemic and deep economic problems, organizations have created new ways of working and improved project performance. While many planned projects have stalled, more of the ongoing projects have achieved their goals and business intentions, and more have been completed within the budget and on time.

The PMI 2021 Pulse of the Profession study first identified the so-called Gymnastic Enterprises, which are characterized by a high degree of flexibility and maneuverability. Old-fashioned organizations were called traditional enterprises, regardless of which approach they worked with – Waterfall, Agile or Hybrid. The most important difference between flexible organizations and traditional ones is that they use all the approaches and methods and their combinations according to the needs and challenges and do not use any of the established methods rigidly.

The ways to solve the challenges and problems caused by the pandemic in the field of project management can be summarized in a few points:

1. Resilience.

2. Strengthen team members.

3. Maximum use of modern Information Technologies.

4. Strengthen the teamwork.

5. Increase the importance of organizational culture.

Ultimately, everything depends on individuals and is created by individuals, so by increasing, promoting and developing responsibility and freedom, it will be possible to survive during the pandemic period and growth further on.
